Regulatory Oversight
The station maintains two full-time NRC resident inspectors on site. The most recent NRC Reactor Oversight Process assessment rated all cornerstones as GREEN with no findings greater than very low safety significance in the past 36 months. The 2024 WANO Peer Review resulted in an overall rating of "1" (highest category) with no Areas for Improvement in Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, or Radiation Protection.
Emergency Preparedness & Environmental Protection
HNP maintains a robust emergency preparedness program compliant with 10 CFR 50.47. The 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone encompasses portions of Trousdale, Smith, and Sumner Counties. Annual full-scale exercises evaluated by FEMA and the NRC received the highest marks in 2025.
Thermal discharges to the Cumberland River are strictly controlled under NPDES Permit TN002XXX. The station operates 48 radiological environmental monitoring locations. All results remain well below regulatory limits and are published annually in the REOR and ARERR reports on the NRC ADAMS system.
Security & Site Protection
Security at Hartsville Nuclear Plant is a core operational pillar. A highly trained, armed security force operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in full compliance with NRC requirements under 10 CFR 73. All personnel, contractors, and visitors pass through the controlled primary access point; vehicles are subject to search and every individual must display valid credentials or be escorted.
The 1,940-acre site includes extensive land and Cumberland River boundaries. Waterside security uses patrol boats, fixed surveillance, and coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard and TWRA. Officers meet or exceed NRC training standards and conduct regular tactical response drills with local law enforcement and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. Cybersecurity controls continue to evolve in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security.
